During pregnancy
During Pregnancy your body goes through natural hormonal changes that can affect the health of your teeth and gums. Gingivitis affects 70% of all pregnant women, and can lead to a more severe form of gum disease call periodontitis which may increase the risk of:
- Premature (preterm) births and low birth weight
- Pre-eclampsia (toxaemia)
- Pregnancy diabetes (gestational diabetes)
Routine dental treatment is safe during pregnancy, although some medication should be avoided so it’s important to let your dentist know if you are pregnant.
Your pregnancy checklist:
- brush at least twice a day with FLUORIDE toothpaste
- use an electric toothbrush as this will improve plaque removal and help to keep your gums healthy
- have a healthy diet; avoid soft drinks and sugary/sticky snacks
- after vomiting; rinse your mouth with water immediately but delay brushing for 30 minutes
- see your dentist early in pregnancy to get your teeth and gums checked
